Prima Facie is an unflinching portrayal of the trauma inflicted on sexual assault victims by the very court system that promises them justice. Tessa is a young barrister working for a prestigious London firm. Coming from a working-class background, she doesn’t have the privileges and connections enjoyed by her colleagues. However, driven by her love of the law she has managed to build a reputation as a formidable criminal barrister. Everything changes when Tessa is raped by a male colleague.

Suzie Miller’s writing is immediate and captivating. Tessa is an unforgettable character, full of rage and determination even at her most vulnerable. This is a novel that explores the physical and emotional toll of rape and the strength and fortitude needed to pursue justice. It bears witness to the way the justice system works to re-traumatise the victim. Powerful and emotionally intense, Prima Facie is a political novel that demands we listen to women’s experiences and advocate for change.
