Layla is in her final year of school. It’s the last year to make sure that the next major phase of her life begins correctly, because she’s got big plans.

All Layla wants to do is fit in and be a normal teenager but when her troubled cousin Marley comes to stay, he unwittingly challenges everything she thought she was. Plus, she’s trying to work out what it means to be Indigenous, she’s falling in love and her best friend Amy has a new best friend.

At a special event, appearing in conversation with her brothers, Steph Tisdell explores her debut novel that brings to life the vibrant essence of being Indigenous, young and full of aspirations.

Steph Tisdell is a comedian, actor, writer and proud Ydinji woman based in Meanjin. While she’s best known — and loved — for cracking great jokes, an early interest in politics saw Steph enrol to study law. Her sense of social justice matched with her formidable intelligence enables Steph to deliver insights that challenge cultural stereotypes in a way that is hilarious, relatable and powerful. The Skin I’m In is her debut novel.
