About Summer Scholars

The Library’s Summer Scholar program is a new initiative aimed to support and foster creative practice, research and study. The program provides a room and behind-the-scenes access to Library staff. Research topics can range from early colonisation of Australia through to investigations of contemporary life.

The principal purpose of the Summer Scholar program is to facilitate and support the use of the Library's unique collections for a three-month period of creative practice, study and research. Project proposals must focus on original materials and identify a clear outcome. 

 

Guidelines and application

It is expected that Summer Scholars will:

• Be creative practitioners across any field (e.g. jewellers, painters, photographers, potters, writers) who want to work with archival materials.
• Be tertiary students who are able to demonstrate a desire to develop their archival research skills.
• Present a project that directly draws on the unique collections of the State Library of New South Wales.
• Be available to participate in an Induction Day on Monday, 2 December 2024.
• Work at the Library full-time or part-time over December 2024 - February 2025
• Present a project that has a specific time frame and outcome substantially achievable within the Scholars program.
• Submit to the Mitchell Librarian a brief summary of their completed project, copies of any outcomes and a 500-word reflection on their time at the Library.
